
Keeping Things Safe When Your Cleaning Line is a Powder Keg
Let’s be honest: running infrared (IR) heaters around chemical cleaning lines is a bit like playing with fire. You’ve got flammable vapors floating around and corrosive agents that want to eat through everything they touch. If you’re using a bare quartz lamp in that environment, you’re basically asking for trouble. One tiny crack or a spark from a loose wire, and you’re not looking at a maintenance issue—you’re looking at an explosion. That’s why we don’t just hand you a lamp. We build custom stainless steel housings to wrap the whole thing in a protective shell.
Why the metal matters
We stick to 304 or 316L stainless steel. Why? Because it doesn’t pit or rust away when it’s staring down a chemical bath. Think of the housing as a bodyguard. It keeps the high-heat quartz tube separate from the volatile fumes in the air. We also use explosion-proof glands to seal where the cables enter. This stops gases from sneaking into the electrical parts. And inside? We use ceramic supports. They keep the lamp floating so it never actually touches the metal walls. If it did, the thermal shock would snap the tube instantly.Not a good day for anyone.
Dealing with the heat
The housing does more than just block fumes; it handles the heat. But here’s the trick: you can’t just seal it up tight like a thermos. If you do, the heat builds up inside and kills your lamp’s lifespan. We spend a lot of time balancing the seal—keeping the bad stuff out while letting the heat breathe. One more tip: watch your power controllers. If you cycle the power too fast, that stainless steel will start to warp. We usually suggest slow-start controllers. It’s gentler on the metal and keeps everything straight.
The trade-off
Now, there is a catch. Adding a steel box puts a bit of distance between your heat source and the part you’re cleaning. You lose some of that raw, direct intensity you’d get from an open lamp. It’s a trade-off for safety, but it’s an easy fix. You can just bump up the wattage or scoot the heater a little closer to the target. Just make sure your ventilation is up to the task so you don’t cook the area around the enclosure.
