How the heat actually moves Steam is all about heating the air, and then hoping that air eventually heats the wood. It’s inefficient. You’re basically paying to heat the entire room just to dry a few pieces of furniture. IR is different. It uses radiation—think of it like the sun hitting your skin on a clear day. The energy goes straight to the surface of the piece. The best part? The “ramp-up” time basically disappears. You don’t have to stand around for an hour waiting for a boiler to hit pressure. You just flip a switch, and the lamps are at temperature in seconds. It’s fast. Really fast. And that changes everything for your daily workflow. The real cost of keeping things the same The biggest drain on your wallet with steam isn’t even the fuel—it’s the maintenance. Pipes corrode. Valves fail. It’s a constant battle. The catch (because there’s always one) Look, IR isn’t a magic wand. If you’re working with thick timber, the surface will dry quickly, but the core still needs time to catch up. If you try to cheat that process by cranking up the wattage, you’ll end up scorching your finish. You have to get your conveyor speed just right to match the heat density of the lamps.
